YOURDEFT The Shiva Tandava Stotram - 15 verses in praise of Great Lord Shiva

Shiva Tandava Strotam

Composed by Ravana, the Asura King of Lanka, Shiva Tandava consists of 15 Shlokas dedicated to Lord Shiva. Ravana was one of the greatest devotee of Shiva. He created this Strotam in praise of Lord Shiva.

After defeating Alaka near Mount Kailash, Ravana was returning to Lanka on his Pushpak Vimana. On the way he saw a beautiful Kailash and wanted to fly to see it. But his Vimana was unable to rise above. He asked Nandi for the reason behind all this. Nandi replied that no one is allowed except Shiva and Parvati. Ravana made fun of his masters Shiva and Paravati and in return Nandi cursed him that he would be destroyed by a Vaanar.

Angry Ravana tried to lift mount Kailash with his twenty arms along with Shiva and Parvati. Lord Shiva pressed his toe and injured his fingers. Ravana cried in pain. In order to impress Lord Shiva he created this Shiva Tanadava Stotram.

After getting impressed by listening and dancing to this Strotam, Lord Shiva not also forgave Ravana but also gave him Chandrahasa. The dance performed with Great energy is termed as Tandava, originated from word ‘Tandul’ which means ‘to jump’.
