Bharat is the land of rich cultural traditions with diversity in geography, climate, languages, clothing and most importantly the food people eat. As well said, “We become the food we eat”. Each and every cell of our body is made of nutrition that the food provides us. The variety one can find in Indian food is amazing. The same dish has different styles of cooking in different parts of the country and so does the taste.

In this article, we are mentioning the List of traditional Indian Food items each Indian state is famous for. Focusing on the vegetarian cuisines only as our country has a large number of vegetarian population and so does the food. Agricultural land is rich with a plant-based diet and spices that make each dish savoring.


Rajasthan is one of the biggest state in terms of area. The Thar dessert and dry climate results into low vegetation. The Food items prepared in the state are rich in spices. No one can ever forget about Dal, Bati and Churma. All the things are filled with lots of ghee. It is complete dish where Churma is sweet prepared from wheat flour. the other must try traditional recipes are Gatte ki Sabji, Ker Sangri, Papad ki Sabji, Bajra Roti etc. Famous snacks are Mirchi Bada, Pyaz Kachori, Kalmi Vada, Kachri ki chutney etc.

Sweet cuisines include Mawa kachori, Ghewar, Bajra Raab, Mohan thaal, Churma Laddu are famous.


Guajarat is west coastal state of India and has primarily vegetarian diet. The state is famous for its snacks, pickles and chutneys. The traditional dishes from the state are well known in all over country. Some of them are Khandvi, Dal Dhokli, Undhiyu, Bardoli ki Khichdi, Methi ka thepla, Dhokla, Handvo, Fafda, Patra, Mango Shreekhand etc.

The desserts from the state are Kansar, gol Papdi, Ghari, Doodhpak, Sutarfeni, Basundi, Faafda Lapsi, Ghugra, Moong Dal Sheera, Biranj etc.

Uttar Pradesh

The biggest state of the country has various dishes from western, central and eastern regions. The famous dishes from the state are Tahri similar to Pulao in western region, Bedmi Puri, Bedhai famous in Agra, Mathura and Firozabad region. Bhindi Salan, Baingan ka Bharta, Lucknow Pulao, Veg Kofta, Aloo Puri.

Large varieties of desserts from the state include Jalebi, Makhan Malai, Falooda Kulfi, Sheermal, Rewari Gajjak, Mathura Peda etc.


The state of Bihar is fmaous for its authentic delicious spicy food. The first and the foremost dish that comes into the mind is Litti Chokha – Litti is round wheat balls filled with Sattu and other spices and Chokha made of boiled brinjal, tomatoes, garlic and onions. Sattu parantha, Choora Bhuja, Bihari Dal Pitha, Ole ki chutney ( Suran), Toori Chana etc. Beverages include Sattu Sharbat and Bel Sharbat.

Indian food desserts famous in the region are Thekua – specially prepared in festivals like Chhath Puja. Khurma, Khajja, Ramdana Laddo, Malpua etc.

Madhya Pradesh

The central state of India also known as heart of India. Madhya Pradesh is land of Maharajas or Kings. The traditional food from the state are Malwa Dal, Indori Poha, Dal Bafla, Sabudana Khichdi, Bhutte ka Kees, Palak Puri, Chakki ka shak etc.

Famous sweets from the state are Mawa Bati, Khoprapak, Shreekhand, Khoya Jalebi, Makhanvada and Kalakand.


Chattisgarh has staple diet of Rice, Bajra and Jawar. The food culture of the place is unique on its own. The famous traditional dishes from the state are Aaamat, Muthia, Chila, Bhajia, Faraa, Bafauri, Dubki Kadhi, Cholai Bhaji, Chech Bhaji, Kanda Bhaji, Kheksi etc. Aamat is well known as Sambhar of Bastar region, traditionally prepared in bamboo shoots. Muthia is traditional breakfast dish made of rice and other spices. Faraa is variant of momos in chattisgarh. Bafauri are speacial type of pakodas prepared in the state.

Sweet dishes from the state are Bidiya, Doodh Fara, Bafauli, Basooli, Tikhur and Anarsa. Iddhar is also one of the famous dish from the state.


Jharkhand has a staple diet of rice, tubers and dals. The dishes are prepared in various forms some consisting low oils and spices. Various types of Rotis from the state are Chilka Roti, Arsa Roti, Khapra Roti etc. Other traditional varieties are Dhuska, Aaru ki Sabji, Mard Jhor, Pittha, Sanai ke phool ka bharta, Moonj Ada, Bamboo shoot vegetable, Chakor Jhol etc. Other
